Combination of elective subjects
European and Comparative Legal History
Legal history is one of the fundamental subjects of Austrian legal education, especially as law students are increasingly studying and working in an international environment. Comparing legal traditions enables students to critically reflect on the legal order in a globalized world. Understanding the complex foundations of European and Austrian legal orders, their characteristics and their differences is more important than ever before.
In addition, the combination of elective subjects “European and Comparative Legal History” is recommended for students who are particularly interested in questions of legal history and legal theory, and who see their time at university as an opportunity to also explore aspects that are not directly related to the application of law.
Structure
The combination of elective subjects consists of a core area of mandatory classes and an elective area of optional classes.
- Core area
Comprises classes worth a total of 9 ECTS and consists exclusively of special lectures, lecture series and courses.
Classes in the core area primarily introduce students to the breadth and diversity of legal history. Classes in the elective area mainly serve to provide students with more in-depth knowledge of the subject matter and offer them the opportunity to study topics in greater detail in line with their individual interests.
- Elective area
Comprises classes worth a total of 9 ECTS, of which 8 ECTS have to be completed as seminars.
The remainder can also be covered by surplus classes in the core area. All classes offered at the Faculty of Law that serve to enhance historical literacy can be credited in the elective area.
Administrative matters
The combination of elective subjects “European and Comparative Legal History” provides focused instruction for earning a supplementary certificate. It is designed to be completed in the course of one academic year (winter semester and summer semester).
Recognition of credits earned in other classes is decided on a case-by-case basis by the coordinator of the combination of elective subjects, Prof. Dr. Ilse Reiter-Zatloukal (or by Asst. Prof. Dr. Gabriele Schneider as her deputy).
Please email a scan of the completed form on the combination of elective subjects (“WFK-Pass”) and a transcript of records (“Sammelzeugnis”) to: elke.maria.pani@univie.ac.at. The form will be checked and signed by Prof. Dr. Ilse Reiter-Zatloukal (no individual signatures necessary).
