Authors' workshop “Translations and Transitions” (15.11.2024)

Max Planck Research Group ‘Translations and Transitions: Legal Practice in 19th Century Japan, China, and the Ottoman Empire’

From 2017 till 2022, the Max Planck Research Group “Translations and Transitions: Legal Practice in 19th Century Japan, China, and the Ottoman Empire” explored the fundamental transformation of the three non-colonized countries’ legal systems on the eve of the 20th century. The project has resulted in two PhD theses and a professorial thesis. Work on an edited volume and a comparative monograph has continued after the end of the funding period.

The workshop organized by Prof. Lena Foljanty brought together the authors of the comparative monograph at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt am Main. They discussed the finished chapters in detail and developed a road map for completing the monograph, which is due to be finalized at a final workshop in Frankfurt in November 2025.
